Notes on Red Eye Reduction & Removal

The dreaded red eyes , bane of most casual photographers. They seem very common these days but that is
probably because far more pictures are being taken now. Also on the modern compact (and digital) cameras
the flashgun is close to the lens. Light from it reflects off the back of the persons eyes creating the Devil look

Although most compact cameras today have Red Eye reducing flash functions, it is only partially successful.
Short of going the full SLR route with an independent Flash gun these tips may help the casual photographer.

1
Get the people to look away from the camera ( An arms length away to one side ). A handy trick is to extend
your free arm to one side & click your fingers just before you take the shot. Alternatively, if you need 2 hands
to hold your camera, get someone to stand behind you to one side & they can give a wave or speak to attract
those eyes away from the lens.

2
Use a camera with the Red Eye reducing flash function and make sure it is switched on. If yours doesn't have
this flash function then it is probably due for replacement . Today's compacts are half the size and probably a
lot cheaper than the current one you have.

3
If this fails & you get Red Eyes this is the decision you must take . If the photograph is important to you , Go
to your local Photo Processor or send it to Photo Doctor or any other reputable Photo Restoration company
to fix, using professional digital photo editing software.

If the picture is not important then one of the multitude of photo editing software packages around may do the
job, but beware. Most photo editing solutions, having automatic red eye removal, are only partially successful.
Pens for removing red eyes are next to useless (My personal opinion)
