Copyright
Its a fairly easy
concept to explain but not easy for many people to accept. Here we
make some sense of it for you
Our
Policy
"To comply
with Copyright Law, we will not knowingly scan, copy or work on
a photo that has been taken by a
professional photographer within the last 100 years without the
permission of the photographer or their estate"
|
To save yourself
disappointment, these are the things we look for before
proceeding with your job
Any
indication of the date or age of the photograph. If it is old
enough we can ignore the other criteria
Professionally
taken photos usually have copyright stamps, marks or a business
name on the back.
Mounted
photographs could be professional. Look for the photographer's
name or mark on the mount
Photographs
may look professional in the way they are taken, i.e. " In
a studio type environment like
Graduation Photos". Even without a mark in many instances
we decline obvious Studio Photographs
Copyright
Law is stringent and the penalties very high. We will however
only apply the above criteria.
We are building a Photographers database to make our life a
little easier. In the mean time if you
want a School photograph repaired you will need to get the
photographer's written permission first
|
The
Copyright Concept
Copyright really means "Ownership of
the created image, design, words or ideas"
Here we are talking about "Who owns the Image", not "Who
owns the photograph"
You may pay good money for the photographs, but you do not own
the Copyright.
Wedding Photos are a good example. Pay big bucks but the
copyright is not yours
Who Owns it?
Copyright belongs automatically to the
photographer or their employer if part of their job.
It remains their property unless specifically sold,
gifted or becomes redundant with time.
How long does
it last?
In the UK copyright belongs to the
photographer & their estate for 50 years after their death
A professional photographer doesn't give up copyright easily.
That event is normally in writing |

Print Formats &
Cropping
A common problem when getting photographic prints
is unexpected & unwanted cropping of the image.
Type 1
All photo printing services have a small automatic cropping
around the border of the negative or digital
image to give a clean edge to the final print (2% to 3%). Not
usually a problem as it rarely cuts into the
main subject but if the object is too close to the edge
of the picture or negative it can be cropped a little
Photo Doctor can cure this. Just
clearly state "No Cropping" in Special Instructions on
the order form.
 |
Type 2
This happens when the print proportions are different than the
proportions (Ratio of the height to width)
of the negative or digital image. A 35mm negative proportions
fit a 6"x 4" print but a 7"x 5" print will
be
cropped at the sides. Again this is not usually a problem but
on occasions part of the subject can be
cropped. Today's automatic processing means that this is not
always picked up.
This will not occur with Photo Doctor
as all our work is by hand and continually monitored. If you
have
selected a print size that would result in unacceptable
cropping we will inform you and offer solutions.

Enlarging and
Print Sizes
These are notes on
enlargements & the limitations. Different factors apply to the
different source media.
We cover information on enlarging from Prints (Flat media),
Negatives, Transparencies & Digital Photos
Enlarging
from Prints
You cannot enlarge from a print without some loss of quality.
The more you enlarge, the greater
the loss in sharpness, definition and colour saturation.
We use our skills to minimise those losses. Photo Doctor can
safely double the original print
size without noticeable deterioration but beyond this depends
very much on the original photo's sharpness and definition.
Our standard service 7"x 5" print assumes that the
original photo is of a reasonable size (4"x 3"
or bigger). If the original picture is very small, like a
passport photo, we will try and achieve the
7"x 5" print of decent quality but if the original is
not clear or sharp we may not get there. If we
have difficulties we will contact you with options. (i.e. two 6"x
4" prints instead)
Larger prints will depend on the original print size, the
sharpness and definition of the image.
|
Enlarging
from Negatives & Slides
A fine razor sharp 35mm negative or slide could be enlarged up
to about A3 size satisfactorily
but the maximum "quality" print size would depend on
the sharpness and definition of the photo.
9"x 6" prints are fairly safe from the average photo
and Photo Doctor will generally achieve
this.
Negs and slides bigger than 35mm can be enlarged more as long
as they have some definition.
We will apply our skills to maximise the enlargement capability
of your photo. Should there be
difficulties in achieving your requested print size we will
contact you with options and solutions.
|
Enlargements
from Digital Camera Photos
Digital photographs can be taken at different resolutions that
are usually referred to in terms of
Megapixels (1 Megapixel = 1 million pixels). This has a direct
bearing on the size of prints that
can be printed out at reasonable quality.
Below is a table giving realistic print sizes for each
Megapixel value.
These are split between sizes for "Normal" and "High"
quality prints.

Digital Services
Specifications
These specs cover the
resolutions for scanning slides & scanning negatives, the
approximate file sizes and
recommended maximum printout sizes for the different scanning
levels . The 2nd table lists the file formats
we can work with and convert
Scanning
Digital archiving (photo
archiving) valuable memories
Any flat media, paper or photographs up to A4 size
35mm and APS film (Scanning Negatives & Slides)
in film strips or slide mounts
These would normally be saved as Tiff files and written to CD
but they can be saved as
High Quality JPGs or any suitable file format you wish . Enter
your preference in " Special Instructions " on the
order form . Note - most other formats create much larger file sizes when saved so there would
be fewer pictures on the CD. Photo archiving does not
include hand adjustment of photographs or the removal of excessive
dust and scratches.
They are digital copies of photos as supplied. Hand assessment
and adjustment by
quotation. For more information on what we do - Read Notes
on Scanning.

Conversion
Conversion to other formats and modes often causes a drop in
quality or fewer colours ( i.e. from
RGB to CMYK, RGB to Indexed Color or from TIFF to JPEG). We
minimise these losses to give
you a picture as close to the original as possible, within
quoted prices. Should conversion cause
an unacceptable drop in quality we will advise you of
alternative options.
